Snips and snails and puppy dog tails

At 11:40am, tails are being docked and dewclaws removed. The pups are 3 days old today. I sat watching the babies wag their tails happily as they nursed this morning, and I started to get sad about the whole scenario. Those little appendages are so cute! I know in the back of my mind that I much prefer the look of the docked Aussie, and that this is completely necessary to maintain breed type. I know what kind of "fun stuff" my kids get stuck in their pants, including burrs, weeds, sticks, and all sorts of other things. So, it makes total sense to remove furry tails on a working dog. Plus, it makes it so there's nothing for an angry Ram to step on!

None the less, I'm worried about how my mama dog is going to handle this. She's very protective, almost overbearingly so, and I know this isn't going to impress her. I can't say that I blame her. This is my first litter, and I knew some of these learning experiences were going to be more painful than others. Maybe if I just keep reminding myself that they're supposed to be tough stock dogs, I won't feel so bad.

They're tough stock dogs, they're tough stock dogs, they're tough stock dogs...
